Meet the Principal

Founder and principal lawyer, Nikola McWilliam was admitted to practice in Victoria in 1999. She has worked as a media, entertainment and communications lawyer in Melbourne, Sydney, London and the Gold Coast. Prior to establishing McGrath Legal, Nikola held a number of senior in-house legal roles with broadcasters, film and television producers and communications companies in Australia and the UK.

From 2000 – 2003, Nikola worked in London as in-house counsel with the BBC and Channel 4 Television. On returning to Australia she took up a position as Head of Legal and Business Affairs with Flying Bark Productions (formerly Yoram Gross EM TV), followed by senior in-house legal roles with Beyond International and Network Ten’s out-of-home advertising subsidiary, Eye Corp Media.

Nikola then stepped up as General Counsel for Australia’s largest listed communications company, WPP AUNZ (formerly STW Communications Group), before establishing McGrath Legal in 2008. McGrath Legal relocated from Sydney to “Hollywood Down Under”, also known as the Gold Coast, in 2016.

Nikola is currently on retainer with Screen Queensland. She is a member of the Law Institute of Victoria, Association of Corporate Counsel Australia, Screen Producers Australia and Women in Film and Television Australia. In addition to a Law degree, she also holds a Commerce degree and a Certificate in Governance Practice and Administration. To four little people, she’s just Mum.
